Shelter is a housing and homelessness charity in the UK, who believe that a home is a fundamental right and exist to defend the right to a safe home because it is the foundation on which lives are built. For more than 50 years, Shelter have been providing support for people struggling with homelessness and bad housing, so they don’t have to fight on their own. They support millions of people each year and campaign to tackle the root causes of Britain’s housing crisis. They are working towards a housing system that is fair and affordable and will not stop until there’s a safe home for everyone.
One in three adults in Britain are now affected by the housing emergency. Thousands sleep on the streets every night and more than a quarter of a million are stuck in 'temporary' accommodation that puts lives on hold for years. Millions of renters are forced to pay too much for too little, unable to complain for fear of being evicted. This is why Shelter has just launched their new General Election campaign. Throughout campaign, Shelter will work with those affected by the housing emergency, campaigning both locally and nationally, to amplify their voices so that the major political parties (and the next government) are forced to prioritise ending the housing emergency.
