aLL Design , Architect

Will Alsop studied at Northampton Art School prior to the Architectural Association, where at the age of 23 he came second place to Richard Rogers & Renzo Piano in the competition to design the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Alsop’s avant-garde modernist style – demonstrated by the Ben Pimlott Building at Goldsmiths and New Islington in Manchester – quickly built him an international reputation, and while he estimates only 10 per cent of his designs have been built, his passion for architecture remains strong: ‘It's like tennis – you have to keep doing it all the time, whether you have a client or not.’ Beginning his professional career with Fry, Drew & Partners and later Cedric Price, Alsop went on to form his own practice and has held numerous academic posts, most notably a tutor of sculpture at Central Saint Martins. Currently a part of ALL Design with Scott Lawrie, the Battersea-based studio created ‘Testbed’, occupying an abandoned property to transform it into an arts venue that has since cemented the area’s reputation as a creative district.
